“Entanglement” is a physical manifestation of the human body drawing and sketching through body-scale gestures.
The form was made through a conversation between the artist’s body and generative AI tools. What does it mean to co-create and co-design with AI, and how does it change what the artist might express? The artist’s agency is put in conversation with machine agency, and material agency, and loops all the way back again.
In this work, Song developed a design workflow (research paper forthcoming / accepted at ACADIA 2024) where she (1) first, sketches and scribbles spatial ideas in VR using the gestural abilities of her body, which is then (2) live-streamed into an AI image tool that rapidly iterates numerous suggestions real-time, so that (3) these visual AI suggestions might feedback loop back into how she continues to develop the design.
Designer intentions became entangled with machine tendencies and material properties — of what the AI wants to do, what the material wants to do, and what the robot is able to do.
“Entanglement” is both the result of this human-machine collaboration process, and also a figural representation of that conversation.
