Abstract:What elements make people think that an interactive public art installation seems “alive”? To answer this question, the paper examines the design and the reception of two public artworks by the INVIVIA studio: MIMMI and PULSUS. Both are responsive installations that aggregate collective data and interpret it through elements such as vibrations, lighting, and/ or mists, but differences in design decisions have led to different perceptions of their aliveness. Through the case study, this paper identifies key attributes in an installation that contribute to the sense of aliveness and discusses the importance of considering aliveness in design. ︎︎︎ Download Paper &nbsp; The creative processes of digital artists and designers are often exploratory, iterative, and open-ended, presenting a misalignment with existing generative AI tools which predominantly operate through linear input-to-output paradigms. This research project and paper presents the design and evaluation of a prototype generative AI creative support tool (CST) aimed at fostering incremental and selective interactions, in an effort to enable artists to maintain more authorship while leveraging AI for inspiration. Through user testing with 3D modellers in architecture and design, we observed that the tool supported non-linear workflows by introducing novel ideas, encouraging non-linear re-evaluation of designs, and reinforcing a sense of artistic authorship over the output. However, participants also faced challenges, including difficulties integrating AI outputs into their workflows and moments of creative friction when outputs diverged from their intentions. This work contributes to ongoing efforts in reimagining generative AI systems used by artists and designers, and proposes an alternate workflow framework to support non-linear, iterative, and discursive creative processes. Excerpt:&nbsp; Recent advancements in generative AI have led to increasingly sophisticated outputs in both 2D and 3D media. Notable innovations in text-to-3D tools, such as those offered by Luma.ai, Tripo, and Hyperhuman, demonstrate significant strides in creating high-fidelity 3D meshes and point clouds from minimal input. However, the directness of their input-output workflows often results in outputs that feel overly "finished," leaving little room for artist-driven exploration or refinement. This output-centric approach creates challenges for artists and designers striving to assert their stylistic identity and creative agenda. This can be analogous to the situation of when designers collaborate with a client and present a photorealistic rendering, the client can feel unable to suggest further development because of the perceived completeness of the work. This can inhibit meaningful dialogue about potential iterative refinement. Instead, when the artist presents rough sketches or preliminary drafts, the unfinished appearance can invite collaboration, allowing for more engaged input from the client. With generative AI tool, the artist has become the client receiving the rendered images, feeling unable to impact the output. Such dynamics have triggered concerns within the discipline about the potential erosion of human authorship in human-AI creative workflows. As Ziv Epstein, et al, articulate in their work on creativity and generative AI, this has been framed as a question of achieving “meaningful human control” (MHC), where MHC is “achieved if human creators can creatively express themselves through the generative system, leading to an outcome that aligns with their intentions and carries their personal, expressive signature. Future work is needed to investigate in what ways generative systems and interfaces can be developed that allow more meaningful human control by adding input streams that provide users fine-grained causal manipulation over outputs”. Existing generative AI tools and their user interface design frequently lack the affordances necessary to support such control. One contributing reason is because of the type of “inputs” these tools commonly accept; in which the designer tries to compress all sorts of information into simple text or image prompt. But designers rely significantly on embodied, tacit knowledge about materiality and contextual understanding about culture and society. &nbsp; Architecture and design are embodied practices. Designers think through making, learn through material experimentation, and generate knowledge through haptic feedback. As Polanyi said, “we know more than we can tell”; much of design expertise is resistant to being written down. What are some alternative “inputs” that make use of bodily intuition, or tacit knowledge about how things are put together in the physical realm? Context: This work explores the usage of generative AI tools beyond the typical “one-click,” input-output generation of 2D image or 3D mesh/model, which can lead to issues of design fixation (difficulty thinking about alternate design solutions once you’ve seen a possible one), visual cliches, and erasure of individual diversity of perspectives into statistical averages. Yet there are also exciting possibilities of leveraging generative and analytical AI. There is a strong need to create better design tools that better support human design intention. This involves changes to the UI of these tools, better scaffolding around tool use, and a better understanding of different models of human-AI interaction in the design process. &nbsp; In our ACADIA 2025 publication, we established a theoretical framework for categorizing different modes of human-AI interaction that are in use today. The following series of experiments are examples of the second mode, a “real-time” paradigm of human-AI interaction,&nbsp; which was introduced in that publication. &nbsp; 1. How might human-machine interfaces mediate between AI and the bodily activities of designing and making? Can the body itself be used to sketch spatial ideas in 3D, with AI proposing creative variations in real-time? This work explores generative AI’s impact at the bodily scale of making, where individual creativity is in direct dialogue with AI and the body becomes a contested site of the human and machine agencies at play.In Ideation, the designer sketches spatial ideas in VR at full scale using body and hand gestures, which are live-streamed into the AI image generator Krea to rapidly iterate variations. The designer sees these AI images real-time and chooses which ideas to feedback loop into further developing the design.In Fabrication, the designer transforms the resulting image into a rough 3D mesh using ZoeDepth, and then manipulates, redesigns, and rebuilds it in Rhino in the expressive style of the designer. Finally, it is CNC-milled by a robotic arm and hand-finished by the designer.The resulting work retains the body-scale gesture of the designer’s original sketch but each inch-tall strip is altered by AI, Rhino operations, robotic toolmarks, and the hand.&nbsp;Generative AI notoriously falters in 3-dimensionality, understanding of materials, or gravity. Thus, one of the challenges was to show that limitation of the process while still physicalizing the form with enough solid heft to withstand the strong vibrations of the robotic cutting tools, so that the marble does not break. Work while at firm: Rogers Partners Architects + Urban Designers An elevated urban park and building over a highway in Atlanta Atlanta’s Park Over GA400 recognizes and makes use of an opportunity to occupy the gap created by the GA400 freeway. The 9-acre public space over the highway provides connections that tie the neighborhood back together, as well as ample capacity for a mix of distinct spatial experiences including the shaded grove of the Commons for picnics and casual gatherings, a grand Plaza with vibrant edges and a large public display at the train stop, lush and intimate Gardens for immersive nature and art walks, and more.
